The Wonju Residency Program will take place at the Toji Cultural Center for eight weeks, starting on September 1 and ending on October 31, 2026. Wonju, a UNESCO City of Literature, is well-known for its arts and culture. It is intended for authors who like to experience a new culture while having undisturbed time to concentrate on their work. If you create poetry, essays, stories, or any other type of creative work, this residence offers you the opportunity to spend a few weeks in Wonju, away from everyday distractions, honing your craft and forming friendships with Korean artists.
Writers from Wonju City of Literature are invited to apply for an 8-week residency at Toji Cultural Center. Wonju City of Literature is intended to foster mutual understanding and camaraderie among towns of literature and to make an international contribution to the cities of literature subnetwork. As in previous years, the Wonju Residency 2026 will be awarded to one writer from cities of literature or one who has a close relationship with cities of literature. Eligibility Criteria:
- Upper-intermediate proficiency in either English or Korean.
- A minimum of five years of experience writing creatively, with at least one piece translated into Korean or English.
- Show willingness to take part in festivals, meetings, interviews, and literary activities in the area.
- Agree to take part in a photo session and interview, as well as to have your profile and photos uploaded to Wonju City of Literature’s promotional media.
- Must have a passion for Korean literature and culture.
- During the residence, participate in at least one local literary festival or exchange event in Korea.
- During the sixth week of the residency, write a brief creative piece (such as a poem or essay) on Wonju or Korea and send it to Wonju City via email.
- During the residency, produce literary works.
