Travellers stuck in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) due to recent flight disruptions have been given some relief.
The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP) has confirmed that Visa overstay fines will be waived for visitors and residents who could not leave the country after flights were cancelled or rescheduled during the ongoing regional airspace crisis.
Authorities say the measure reflects the UAE’s humanitarian approach to travellers caught in unexpected circumstances.
Who Can Get the Overstay Fine Waiver
The overstay fine exemption applies to travellers who stayed longer than allowed because their flights were cancelled or rescheduled.
According to authorities, the waiver covers fines starting from February 28 and applies to several groups:
- Visitors holding tourist visas
- Travellers on visit visas
- People who already had an exit permit
- Residents who had cancelled their residence visa while preparing to leave the UAE
This means affected travellers will not be penalised for staying longer than their visa allowed if the delay happened because of the ongoing airspace disruptions.

Airport Teams Helping Stranded Travellers
To address the situation, UAE authorities say special support teams have been deployed to airports and customer service centres. These teams are working under emergency response plans and are helping passengers whose travel plans were interrupted.
Support is currently available at:
- UAE airports
- Government Customer Happiness Centres
Officials say the teams are coordinating with airlines and other government departments to assist stranded passengers.
Why Flights Were Disrupted
The disruption started after several countries in the region closed their airspace following missile and drone attacks linked to rising tensions involving Iran.
Because of these closures, many airlines had to cancel or reroute flights across the Middle East.
Flights operated by UAE carriers have been largely suspended until at least March 7, although some special services are still running.
These include repatriation flights arranged with the General Civil Aviation Authority to help stranded passengers return home.
Air Traffic Slowly Returning
Authorities say the situation is starting to improve. Safe air corridors have now been opened with several Gulf countries. This allows up to 48 flights per hour as air traffic slowly returns to normal.
Travellers are advised to:
- Check updates from official government sources
- Stay in contact with their airline for the latest flight information
- Confirm schedules before heading to the airport
For now, the overstay fine waiver offers some reassurance to travellers who suddenly found themselves unable to leave the UAE during the regional airspace shutdown.
