Travelling out of Thailand is about to get more expensive for international passengers.
Thailand will increase its international passenger service charge by more than 50% starting June 20, according to a report by the Bangkok Post. The new fee will apply at six major airports operated by Airports of Thailand (AOT).
What Is Thailand’s International Departure Fee?
Thailand’s international departure fee is a charge collected from passengers flying out of the country on international routes. The amount is usually included in the airfare when travellers book their tickets.
Under the new system starting June 20, the fee will increase from 730 baht to 1,120 baht per passenger at six major airports operated by Airports of Thailand (AOT).
Which Airports Are Affected?
The higher airport charge will apply to international travellers departing from:
- Suvarnabhumi Airport
- Don Mueang International Airport
- Chiang Mai International Airport
- Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai International Airport
- Phuket International Airport
- Hat Yai International Airport
The increase affects only international passengers. Domestic travellers will not see any change.
Why Thailand Is Increasing the Airport Fee
According to the report, AOT says the extra money will help pay for airport expansion and new technology upgrades. Planned projects include:
- Expanding passenger terminals
- Installing automated Common Use Passenger Processing Systems (CUPPS)
- Improving airport safety and security technology
Officials believe the higher fee will not seriously affect tourism demand, especially since Thailand remains one of Asia’s busiest travel destinations.
Thailand Says Charges Still Lower Than Singapore
AOT president Paweena Jariyathitipong reportedly said Thailand’s updated airport charge would remain below fees paid by international travellers in Singapore, where airport-related charges can reach around 1,600 baht.
Thailand continues to attract millions of international visitors every year, particularly through Bangkok and popular beach destinations like Phuket.
Airfare Costs Also Rising Due to Fuel Surcharge
Airlines have also recently increased fuel surcharges following a rise in Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices. As a result, many international ticket prices have become more expensive in recent weeks.
Combined with Thailand’s higher airport departure fee, travellers may notice a further increase in overall travel costs.
What This Means for Travellers
For most visitors, the increase will likely be included in the airline ticket price, depending on the airline and booking date. Still, travellers planning trips to Thailand later this year may notice slightly higher airfare costs on international departures.
The change comes as Thailand continues investing heavily in airport infrastructure to handle growing tourism numbers and improve the overall passenger experience.
