South Korea is widening access to its Top-Tier Visa, bringing professors and researchers in science and technology fields into a programme that was previously geared toward professionals working in industries such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and biotechnology.
The expansion took effect on June 1, 2026, and gives qualified foreign academics a faster route to long-term residency in South Korea.

What Is South Korea’s Top-Tier Visa?
Introduced in 2025, South Korea’s Top-Tier Visa is designed for highly skilled foreign professionals. It offers long-term F-2 residency, family benefits, and a pathway to permanent residence after three years.
What the Visa Offers
Successful applicants receive an F-2 residence visa, allowing them and their immediate family members to live in South Korea long-term. The programme also opens the door to permanent residency after three years.
Those who meet the eligibility criteria but have not yet secured a job can stay in South Korea for up to two years on a jobseeker visa while searching for qualifying employment.
Who Can Apply?
For highly skilled professionals, the standard requirements include:
- A master’s or doctoral degree from a top 100 global university
- At least eight years of professional experience
- A minimum of three years’ experience at a top 500 company
- Employment with a South Korean high-tech company
- A salary worth at least three times South Korea’s per capita gross national income
Under the expanded rules, professors and researchers will be evaluated on additional factors, including:
- Internationally recognised awards
- Research publications
- Contributions to commercialising technology
- Research and academic experience
Why It Matters for Indians
The move could create new opportunities for Indian researchers, scientists, and university faculty looking beyond traditional destinations such as the United States, Canada, or Europe.
South Korea has been steadily positioning itself as a magnet for global talent. This latest expansion suggests the country is now competing as aggressively for researchers as it already does for engineers and tech specialists.
Indian travellers can already access South Korea through direct flights from major hubs, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai, making relocation and academic collaboration more practical than ever.
Take
We see this as a smart move from South Korea. For highly qualified Indian researchers and academics, it offers a realistic pathway to residency, family relocation, and long-term career growth in Asia.
