The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has officially opened applications for its Indigenous Fellowship Program (IFP) 2026, which will provide a one-of-a-kind four-week training session in Geneva. This long-standing effort invites indigenous leaders, activists, and community representatives to learn about UN mechanisms and how to effectively advocate for indigenous peoples’ rights on a worldwide scale. Fellows from all four language components of the program train together in Geneva for four weeks, with simultaneous interpretation. The training curriculum is normally held in conjunction with the annual session of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (held in June/July each year), allowing fellows to engage more actively in that Mechanism.
The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) created the Indigenous Fellowship Programme in 1997, coinciding with the inaugural International Decade of Indigenous Peoples. The program’s goal is to provide indigenous people with an opportunity to learn about the United Nations system and processes dealing with human rights issues in general and indigenous issues in particular. Trained participants are better able to help their organizations and communities safeguard and promote their rights. This training session is accessible in four languages: English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese. Must check AAUW International Fellowship Program 2026 in USA (Stipend $50000).
