International students in New Zealand will soon have an extra chance to stay and work after graduation. From November 16, 2026, the country will introduce a new six-month Short-term Graduate Work Visa while also widening access to its Post Study Work Visa.
For international students, who remain one of New Zealand’s largest international student groups, the move creates another pathway to gain overseas work experience after completing studies.
New Six-Month Graduate Work Visa
The new Short-term Graduate Work Visa is designed for graduates who finish their studies in New Zealand but do not meet the requirements for a Post Study Work Visa.
The visa grants six months of open work rights, giving graduates time to secure employment and potentially move to an Accredited Employer Work Visa. To qualify, applicants must:
- Complete a Level 5, Level 6, or Level 7 qualification in New Zealand
- Study full-time for at least 24 weeks
- Have at least NZD 5,000 available for living expenses
- Apply within three months of their student visa expiring
The visa can only be issued once and cannot be extended.
Restrictions Applicants Should Know
While visa holders can work for employers across New Zealand, there are limits. They cannot:
- Start or operate a business
- Sponsor a partner for a work visa
- Sponsor dependent children for student visas
Anyone who has previously held either a Post Study Work Visa or a Short-term Graduate Work Visa will not be eligible.
More Graduate Diploma Holders Can Access Post-Study Work Visas
New Zealand is also expanding eligibility for its Post Study Work Visa.
From November 16, 2026, graduates who complete a Level 7 Graduate Diploma and already hold a bachelor’s degree, whether earned in New Zealand or overseas, will become eligible for a Post Study Work Visa.
Applicants must complete the diploma full-time and provide evidence of their bachelor’s qualification, along with academic transcripts.
For many Indian students who already hold a bachelor’s degree before pursuing a graduate diploma abroad, this change closes a gap that previously limited post-study work options.
How Long Will the Visa Last?
Eligible graduate diploma holders will receive a Post Study Work Visa matching the time spent studying in New Zealand, up to a maximum of one year. Current rules remain unchanged in one area: applicants can receive only one Post Study Work Visa during their lifetime.
What About Students Without a Bachelor’s Degree?
Graduate diploma holders who do not have a bachelor’s degree may still qualify for a Post Study Work Visa if their qualification appears on New Zealand’s Green List and they work in the related occupation.
Those whose qualification is not linked to a Green List occupation will instead be able to use the new six-month Short-term Graduate Work Visa.
This reflects a wider trend across major study destinations. Countries are becoming more selective about post-study work rights while still creating targeted pathways for graduates who can fill labour shortages.
Why This Matters for Indian Students
New Zealand is accessible from major Indian cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad, through one-stop connections via Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, and Australian hubs.
The new visa option provides a safety net for graduates who miss out on a Post Study Work Visa but still want time to secure skilled employment in New Zealand.
Take
We see this as a practical update for Indian students. A six-month job-search window is better than leaving immediately, and broader post-study work eligibility makes New Zealand a stronger study destination.
