Ireland Raises Family Reunification Income Requirements, Adds Housing Checks

by awbtravelsnews | June 21, 2026

Bringing family members to Ireland just got more expensive. From June 12, 2026, Ireland has raised the financial requirements for people sponsoring non-EEA, Swiss, and UK family members under its family reunification programme. The country has also introduced new accommodation checks for some foreign workers seeking to bring dependents.

For foreign nationals living and working in Ireland, especially those on employment permits, the changes raise the bar for family sponsorship. They could delay plans to reunite with spouses and children.

Higher Income Thresholds for Sponsors

Irish citizens sponsoring family members must now show a gross income of at least €75,000 over three years, equivalent to €25,000 annually.

Previously, the income requirement stood at €40,000 over three years, or roughly €13,333 per year. The jump is substantial and reflects Ireland’s tougher approach to migration-linked family sponsorship.

Foreign nationals holding Category C status, including many General Employment Permit holders, also face higher requirements.

To sponsor one dependent child, they must now earn a minimum net annual salary of €39,780, up from €36,660. The required income increases by around €5,000 to €6,000 for each additional child.

New Accommodation Requirement

The other change is less discussed but could prove just as important. Foreign national sponsors under Category C may now be asked to prove they have suitable accommodation for family members. Authorities can request evidence such as property ownership records or tenancy agreements during the application process.

If requested, applicants must provide the documents within six months. Previously, no such housing requirement applied.

Ireland Expands Work Permit List

The family sponsorship changes come alongside a broader overhaul of Ireland’s employment permit system. Authorities have introduced 32 updates, including new occupations under the Critical Skills Employment Permit, expanded General Employment Permit eligibility, and revised permit quotas aimed at filling workforce gaps across several industries.

What This Means for Indians in Ireland

Thousands of Indians work in Ireland’s technology, healthcare, engineering, and financial services sectors, many of them on employment permits that fall within Category C sponsorship rules.

Those planning to bring children or other dependants should now review both their income levels and housing arrangements before starting an application. Meeting salary thresholds alone may no longer be enough.

The broader trend is becoming hard to ignore. Across Europe, governments are increasingly linking family migration approvals to income stability and housing capacity rather than employment status alone.

Take

We see Ireland moving towards stricter family sponsorship rules, similar to trends elsewhere in Europe. If you’re planning a family reunification, I’d start preparing income and housing documents much earlier than before.
