France has rolled out more flexible EU Blue Card rules, opening the door to a wider pool of skilled foreign professionals and making it easier for workers already living in the EU to relocate.
For Indian professionals targeting jobs in France or using another EU country as a stepping stone, the changes could make the path to working and settling in Europe much smoother.

France EU Blue Card Requirements Are Relaxed
France has introduced several updates under the 2021 EU Blue Card Directive:
1. Work Experience Can Replace a Degree
Applicants can now qualify for a French EU Blue Card with three years of relevant professional experience gained within the last seven years, even without a university degree.
Previously, candidates generally needed a three-year higher education qualification or five years of professional experience. The new route is expected to benefit experienced IT, engineering, and technical professionals.
2. Shorter Employment Contracts Now Accepted
The minimum job contract requirement has been cut from 12 months to six months. This gives French employers greater hiring flexibility, particularly in sectors facing talent shortages.
3. Easier Mobility Across Europe
EU Blue Card holders who have already spent 12 months in another EU country can now move to France without obtaining a separate French visa. They must apply for a French EU Blue Card within one month of arrival.
Previously, workers had to wait 18 months before gaining this mobility right.
Here’s what this really signals: Europe is increasingly competing for skilled global talent, and countries like France are lowering barriers to attract workers faster.
New 90-Day Work Permit Exemption

One of the most useful changes took effect on April 25, 2026.
Holders of an EU Blue Card issued by another EU country, as well as certain EU Long-Term Residence Permit holders, can now work in France for up to 90 days within any 180 days without obtaining a work permit.
This could be particularly useful for professionals assigned to short-term projects, client visits, or temporary assignments in France.
Longer Validity for Short-Term Blue Cards
For employment contracts shorter than two years, France will now issue EU Blue Cards that remain valid for three months beyond the contract period, up to a maximum validity of 24 months.
The extra time gives workers breathing room to renew their status or secure a new job without immediately losing their right to stay.
Faster Route to Long-Term Residence
France has also made it easier for EU Blue Card holders to qualify for the 10-year EU Long-Term Residence Permit.
Certain periods spent in other EU countries on eligible residence permits can now count toward the five-year residence requirement, making long-term settlement more achievable.
What It Means for Indians
For Indian professionals working in technology, engineering, healthcare, research, and other high-skilled sectors, France is becoming a more attractive destination.
The new rules offer:
- More eligibility options without a degree
- Faster mobility within the EU
- Greater flexibility for short-term assignments
- A clearer pathway to long-term residence
With direct flights connecting India to major French cities, the country is positioning itself as one of Europe’s more accessible destinations for international talent.
Take
We see these reforms as a practical win for skilled professionals. France is making recruitment, mobility, and long-term settlement easier, giving Indian talent more options to build careers across Europe.
