Bangladesh Suspends Visa Services in New Delhi, Kolkata, and Agartala

by awbtravelsnews | January 10, 2026

Bangladesh has temporarily stopped visa services at some of its main missions in India. The decision affects travellers planning trips between the two countries and adds to growing uncertainty around cross-border travel.

Here is what is happening, explained simply.

Which Visa Offices Are Closed Right Now?

Bangladesh has asked three of its missions in India to shut their visa sections for now:

These closures apply to most visa categories. Business and work visas are not affected and continue to be processed.

It is worth noting here that visa services at other consulates, including Mumbai and Chennai, are still running as usual.

Why Did Bangladesh Take This Step?

According to Bangladesh’s foreign affairs adviser, M Touhid Hossain, the move is linked to security concerns. Speaking to the media, he said the decision was temporary and taken to protect staff and facilities. No timeline has been given for when normal services will resume.

What About the US Visa Bond Issue?

During the same briefing, Bangladesh also confirmed it has asked the United States to reverse a newly introduced visa bond requirement. The adviser did not share further details, but the request suggests Bangladesh is pushing back against tighter visa rules affecting its citizens.

The Wider Political Context

Relations between Bangladesh and India have been tense for months. Things worsened after August 2024, when India imposed visa restrictions on Bangladeshi nationals, citing security risks.

That followed major political unrest in Bangladesh. Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina was removed from power after violent student-led protests in July and August 2024. Since then, diplomatic ties have remained fragile.

What This Means For Travellers

If you were planning to apply for a Bangladeshi visa in New Delhi, Kolkata, or Agartala, you will need to wait or apply through Mumbai or Chennai instead.

Visa processing times may increase as applications shift to fewer centres. Travellers should double-check visa office status before making travel plans.

For now, this is a pause, not a permanent shutdown. But until official updates are issued, travellers should expect delays and plan cautiously.
