Zamzam Water Airline Rules 2026: Which Carriers Allow a Free Extra Bag?

by awbtravelsnews | May 24, 2026

Saudi Arabia has officially announced the Umrah calendar for the 1448 AH season. As per the announcement, Saudi Arabia will open Umrah visas from May 31, 2026, and allow international pilgrims to start arriving from June 1.

For many pilgrims heading back home after Umrah, bringing Zamzam water for family and relatives is simply part of the journey. But many travellers still get caught off guard because every airline sets its own rules for Zamzam water. Airlines decide how much you can carry, how you must pack it, and whether they count it within your baggage allowance.

What Is Zamzam Water?

Zamzam Water (زمزم) is the sacred spring water from Makkah that millions of pilgrims carry home each year after Umrah and Hajj. Airlines treat it like any other liquid in one context and like a near-impossibility in another.

The Golden Rules of Zamzam Transport

Before looking at specific airlines, every traveller must abide by the universal regulations mandated by the Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA):

1. No Self-Filling

The first and most important rule for carrying Zamzam water is that you cannot pack water collected directly from the taps in Makkah in your bags. Airport security will confiscate it.

2. Official Bottling Only

You must purchase the official, factory-sealed 5-litre plastic container wrapped in a protective cardboard box. Authorised airport distribution counters, including those at King Abdulaziz International Airport Terminal 1, sell these bottles for around 12 SAR.

3. The 100ml Cabin Luggage Rule

Airlines strictly ban Zamzam water in cabin baggage on all international flights under global liquid security rules. The only exception is a container of 100ml or less packed inside a transparent 1-litre resealable plastic pouch.

4. Never Pack Inside Suitcases

Lastly, never place Zamzam bottles inside your main suitcase containing clothes. Airlines completely prohibit this practice. It must travel as an independent, tagged piece of cargo.

✈️ 2026 Airline-Wise Zamzam Water Rules

Almost every airline limits passengers to one 5-litre Zamzam bottle each. The real difference comes down to baggage rules. Some airlines allow it as a free extra item, while others count it within your checked baggage allowance.

Here’s how much Zamzam water you can carry, which airlines allow it, and the rules you need to know before flying.

Air India

Air India operates direct flights from Indian cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Lucknow, and Kochi to Jeddah and Madinah, especially during the Hajj and Umrah seasons. The airline remains one of the most commonly used options for Indian pilgrims travelling to Saudi Arabia.
