UAE Allows Some Residents to Return Even With Expired Visas Until March 31, 2026

by awbtravelsnews | March 15, 2026

Good news for residents of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) who were stuck outside the country after their residence visas expired: they now have a short window to return without trouble.

The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) has introduced a temporary measure that allows eligible residents to re-enter the UAE even if their visa expired while they were abroad.

The rule is temporary and will remain in place until March 31, 2026. It also removes fines that would normally apply when a residency visa expires outside the country.

Who Can Use This Temporary UAE Re-Entry Rule?

The relief applies to foreign residents whose UAE residence visas expired on or after February 28, 2026, while they were outside the country.

Normally, a person in this situation would need to apply for a new entry permit before travelling back to the UAE. Under the new measure, that step is not required.

Instead, eligible residents can travel back to the UAE and complete the necessary residency procedures once they arrive.

No Fines for Visa Expiry During the Period

Another key part of the rule is the waiver of fines.

Residents who qualify will not have to pay penalties linked to their residency visa expiring while they were outside the UAE. This gives them a chance to return and restore their residency status without extra costs.

Once they arrive, they can renew or regularise their residency through the immigration authorities.

Deadline to Enter the UAE

The window to use this special measure is limited. Residents must enter the UAE on or before March 31, 2026, to benefit from the exemption. After that date, normal immigration rules will apply again.

Anyone who misses the deadline may have to follow the usual process, which can include applying for a new entry permit.

Documents Travellers Should Carry

Airlines may ask passengers to show proof of their previous UAE residency during check-in.

Travellers should carry:

These documents help confirm eligibility under the temporary rule.

Why the UAE Introduced This Measure

Authorities say the decision aims to help residents who were unable to return due to travel disruptions in the Middle East.

By allowing them to come back without penalties, the UAE is giving affected residents a simple way to restore their residency status and return to normal life in the country.

The move also reflects the UAE’s broader approach in recent years, which has included more flexible visa policies and temporary measures to support residents during travel disruptions.
