The fully sponsored ASEF ASEM Human Rights Seminar 2026 will be held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, from March 30 to April 1, 2026. Note that there is no application cost, and all the expenses are reimbursed. The Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) and its co-organizers of the Informal ASEM Human Rights Seminar series (ASEMHRS) are hosting a three-day in-person capacity-building event on Future-Proofing AI: Building Human-in-the-Loop Governance Skills for Rights-Respecting AI.
Early-career professionals are invited to apply for a three-day, in-person capacity-building program offered by the Asia–Europe Foundation (ASEF) and its co-organizers of the Informal ASEM Human Rights Seminar series (ASEMHRS). The goal of this intensive training program is to increase professionals’ ability in Asia and Europe to incorporate human rights principles into the governance of artificial intelligence (AI). The program, which combines policy analysis, case-based learning, and cooperative design exercises, is delivered by professionals from both areas and takes a multidisciplinary, cross-sectoral approach. Future-proofing AI: Developing Human-in-the-Loop Governance Skills for RightsRespecting AI
Objectives:
- The goal is to increase professionals’ knowledge of incorporating human rights principles into the governance of artificial intelligence (AI) throughout Asia and Europe.
- Strenghthning our knowledge of how AI and human rights are related.
- Developing the capacity to objectively evaluate human rights issues pertaining to AI.
- Gaining the ability to create people-centered, context-sensitive AI governance strategies.
Program Outcome:
- Describe the connection between AI and human rights, highlighting important rights issues in the creation and application of AI.
- Compare and discuss regional perspectives on AI and human rights in Asia and Europe.
- Analyze AI-related human rights concerns critically by working together to examine actual examples.
- Determine new developments, difficulties, and important players in AI governance.
- Create people-centered, context-sensitive AI governance strategies that are pertinent to their industries.
- Create practical strategies to reduce the threats to human rights in AI systems.
- Contribute to the design of a comprehensive regional framework for transparent, responsible, and rights-respecting AI governance.

Eligibility Criteria:
- Applicants must rust reside in an ASEM member country (includes 51 countries across Asia and Europe, plus the EU and ASEAN Secretariat).
- Experience: Early-career professionals with 1–5 years of relevant experience.
- Participation: Currently engaged in the deployment, assessment, or promotion of AI.
- Cohort Size: About 25 to 30 people will be chosen.
Target Audience:
- Industry Practitioners: Experts who make important choices about the application of AI that affect the public and the industry.
- Civil Society & Advocacy: People who record the negative effects of AI, organize for accountability, and assist impacted populations.
- Academics and researchers: Professionals who share information across several fields and contribute to public discourse.
- Policy and Regulatory Professionals: Up-and-coming professionals striving to implement institutional regulations and AI governance frameworks.
