Travelling to South Africa now comes with one extra step. From 1 July 2026, every traveller entering or leaving the country must complete a mandatory online customs declaration before departure, whether travelling by air, land, sea, or rail.
The new rule applies to foreign nationals, permanent residents, and South African citizens. For international travellers flying to Johannesburg or Cape Town, the declaration is now part of the pre-travel checklist alongside your passport, visa, and flight documents.

What You Need to Declare
The online form asks travellers to disclose customs-related items, including:
- Goods exceeding South Africa’s duty-free allowance
- Restricted or prohibited goods
- Reportable amounts of cash or currency
- Any other items that require customs declaration
If you have nothing to declare, you can simply submit a ‘Nil’ declaration.
How to Fill South Africa’s Digital Customs Declaration
Complete your declaration online within 24 hours before travelling. Enter your personal and travel details, then declare any goods above duty-free limits, restricted items, or reportable cash.
Follow these quick steps before you travel:
- Visit the SARS Traveller Declaration portal within 24 hours before departure.
- Enter your personal details and travel information.
- Declare any goods above duty-free limits, restricted items, or reportable cash.
- If you have nothing to declare, select “Nil Declaration.”
- Review your details and submit the form.
- Save or print the confirmation email and keep it handy for customs checks on arrival or departure.
Missed the Online Form? Expect Delays
Travellers who cannot complete the declaration before travelling can still use self-service kiosks at ports of entry and exit where available. However, SARS says this could lead to longer processing times.
The declaration must generally be submitted within 24 hours before departure, including before the final flight segment into South Africa for connecting itineraries. After submission, travellers receive an email confirmation that should be saved or printed for inspection if requested.
This Is a Customs Rule, Not a Visa Change
The requirement is administered by the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and does not change South Africa’s immigration or visa rules. If you already need a visa to visit South Africa, that process remains the same.
What this really signals is that more countries are moving customs formalities online before travellers even reach the border, reducing paperwork while giving border agencies advance information. This is becoming a familiar pattern across international travel.
Don’t Ignore the Requirement
Submitting false information or failing to file a required declaration can result in:
- Delays at the border
- Detention or forfeiture of goods
- Financial penalties
- Other enforcement action under South African customs law
The online declaration system was first tested at selected airports in 2022 before being rolled out nationwide as a mandatory requirement.
Take
We think this is a sensible update. If you’re travelling from India to South Africa, completing the online customs declaration before departure should save time and help you avoid unnecessary delays at the border.
