Two New Residence Pathways

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) will replace the existing framework with two dedicated streams based on occupation and experience.

1. Skilled Work Experience Pathway

• For ANZSCO Skill Level 1 to 3 occupations.
• Requires at least five years of relevant work experience.
• Includes at least two years of New Zealand work experience paid at 1.1 times the median wage.

2. Trades and Technician Pathway

• For applicants with a Level 4 or higher qualification.
• Requires four years of post-qualification skilled work experience.
• Includes at least 18 months of New Zealand employment at or above the median wage.

Easier Work Experience Rules

One of the biggest changes is a shorter qualifying period for some applicants.

Immigration New Zealand will reduce the work experience requirement for certain SMC pathways from three years to a maximum of two years. Relevant overseas work experience will still count towards eligibility where applicable.

For many Indian professionals already working in New Zealand, this could mean reaching residency sooner than under the current rules.

Wage Rules Become Simpler

The government is also removing the wage increase requirement during the qualifying period.

Instead, applicants must simply continue earning at least the median wage while working in New Zealand to remain eligible for residence. That removes pressure to secure salary increases solely to satisfy immigration rules.

New Zealand Degrees Get More Weight

Students graduating from New Zealand universities will receive higher points under the revised system.

This reflects a broader shift seen across several immigration destinations. Countries increasingly reward applicants who study, work, and integrate locally before applying for permanent residence.

Alongside the wider reforms, Immigration New Zealand has updated several Skilled Residence Visa rules.

Key changes include:

• Revised wage assessment rules now apply across all relevant Skilled Residence Visa categories.
• Applicants claiming points for Level 8 or Level 9 qualifications, except those receiving five points for a New Zealand Master’s degree, must also hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent undergraduate qualification.
• An International Qualification Assessment is not required for the supporting bachelor’s qualification.
• The 120-credit requirement has been removed for overseas Trades and Technician qualifications, although equivalent New Zealand qualifications must still total at least 120 credits.
• Self-employment will no longer count as directly relevant work experience under the two new residence pathways.
• Immigration officers now have clearer grounds to refuse applications where a job offer is considered not genuine.

Indian nationals remain one of New Zealand’s largest sources of international students and skilled migrants. These reforms are likely to benefit those who build local experience before seeking residence.
